  • Craft Room Clean Up!

    Laura Kaesshaefer
    25 Jan 2012 | 6:04 am
With 2012 well underway, we thought the Craft Room here at our offices could use a good clean. This three day undertaking was well worth the work (hauling heavy bins while breathing in dust and glitter), as there's much to be said for working in a clean, organized environment. We even found some inspiration along the way while uprooting decade (!) old projects and development. Take a look below to see the transformation! Back Next 1 of 22 1 A very disheveled craft room. 2 The back of the craft room (pre-clean!). 3 We gave lots of fun materials to our beloved MFTA (Materials for the Arts)! 4…
  • Tuesday Inspiration!

    24 Jan 2012 | 6:00 am
About a year ago I tried out The Artist's Way, a great tool used by professionals and amateurs alike to explore and release their creative potential. Now, while I didn't quite make it through the entire 12-week "course," I took away a number of tools and techniques that I continue to use every day. One of those is the idea of "filling the well" every week by taking yourself on an "artist date." More specifically, this means setting aside time to consciously do something (anything) that could lead to inspiration. Sometimes that means going to a museum, seeing a movie, or even cooking a…

It will make a very sweet surprise for your loved one!

  • A Lesson in Cat Grooming

    Francesca
    26 Jan 2012 | 10:01 pm
I was wandering around the house the other day when I realized that the fur balls were nowhere to be found.  They usually drape themselves all over the furniture, but I couldn’t find a single cat anywhere.  That’s when I thought I’d go to the basement laundry room and have a look down there. Back Next 1 of 12 1 Hey Verdi! Why are all the cats hiding in the laundry room? Are you all scaredy-cats? 2 No, Francesca, being scared has nothing to do with it. We're all waiting for our turn to be groomed. This is more than just a laundry room, you know—it's also our salon! 3 Laura and Maria…

    26 Jan 2012 | 12:44 am
I recently shared the story of fashion photographer extraordinaire, Richard Phibbs, focusing his lens on the plight of shelter animals. Having now had the good fortune to spend a day with Phibbs, his crew and the NY shelter staff- who he very accurately described as amazing- I'm here to share my account of 'shelter runway shoot part deux'... That's French for ‘part two’... I thought some French lingo might be more fitting in reference to such a high brow event! Last week, Francesca blogged about me travelling to Maryland to compete in another dog show.  With the Westminster Kennel Club Show quickly approaching, my breeder, Karen Tracy and my handler, Jan Kolnik want me to get as much experience as possible.  Here are Karen's photos showing what happened in Maryland. • What We Didn't Know About Donkey Hooves

    23 Jan 2012 | 10:01 pm
As you may know by now, I love playing with our miniature donkeys, Clive, Rufus, and Billie.  The other day, I was running in their paddock trying to get them to play with me, but they said that they had something important to do in the stable.  At first I thought they were just brushing me off, but now Franny and I know a little bit more about our donkey friends. Back Next 1 of 13 1 Where is that Sharkey? I can hear her barking and I think I know where she is. 2 Franny, I'm in with the donks trying to get them to play tag! Run, Billie! Run, Rufus! Run, Clive! Come on, I want to play! 3…
  • What to Make of a Pile of Feathers!

    Sharkey
    22 Jan 2012 | 10:01 pm
The other day, Franny and I went outside in hopes of doing a little squirrel chasing.  One of the best places to find squirrels at the farm is under the bird feeders, where there is usually a free meal waiting for them.  On that particular day, however, we came upon a sorry scene. Back Next 1 of 12 1 Francesca and I love this area of the farm. 2 We have so many pretty songbirds that come to feed here and we have so many squirrels to chase because they, too, come to eat the seeds that fall to the ground. 3 Oh no, Francesca! This pile of feathers can't be a good thing! 4 This is more than…

  • Dumplings, Dim Sum and More….!

    Stacey Meyer
    27 Jan 2012 | 10:24 am
The Chinese New Year party was a big hit. Most everything went off without a hitch. I made about 100 dumplings, so this year should be full of abundance and prosperity. I have learned that making that many dumplings is quite an endeavor and cooking 100 dumplings is even a greater task. The first batch I steamed in a bamboo steamer lined with parchment paper. My first mistake was that I didn’t spray the parchment with cooking spray and the dumplings all stuck to the paper. The next batch I boiled, they were good but tasted a little doughy. I noticed people were having trouble eating them…
  • Superbowl Party!!

    Stacey Meyer
    25 Jan 2012 | 7:41 am
The Superbowl is just around the corner and the big question is “Are you going to have a big party, a little party or are you going to go to a party?” The Superbowl is one of the number one party events of the year. Here are a few things to think about if you are going to a Superbowl party. Ask your host or hostess if you can bring anything. It is always nice to show up with a little extra somethin’ somethin’. Maybe you can bring extra beer or wine or how about an h’or d’oeuvre or appetizer. You could also show up ahead of time to help set up or stay a…
  • Craving Kale

    Stacey Meyer
    23 Jan 2012 | 7:38 am
Kale is by far one of the best super foods, its dark leafy greens are packed with antioxidants and an excellent source of vitamins such as A, K and C. It is full of chlorophyll and packed with fiber. It is absolutely one of my favorite greens. I was never really fond of cabbage, it has taken me a long time to acquire a taste for it. But I knew that it was on the top of the list of super foods and that at some point I would need to learn to love it. On the other hand, I have always loved collard greens and when I discovered lacinata kale it was love at first bite. I crave it. I have to have it…
  • Year of the Dragon 2012

    Stacey Meyer
    21 Jan 2012 | 10:07 am
January 23rd marks Chinese New Year and this is the year of the dragon. Last year was the year of the rabbit, quite a juxtaposition don’t you think. The Dragon is the major symbol of good fortune and is associated with new beginnings in Chinese astrology, so expect grand things this year. I have celebrated New Year’s a few times in the past two months. I consider my birthday my personal New Year (back in December) and of course the traditional Western New Year and now I will also celebrate the Chinese New Year. I am planning on hosting a party for this great event, serving all of…
  • In Season: Bring in the New Year with Kumquats!

    Charlotte Martory
    20 Jan 2012 | 3:13 pm
You probably already know that my backyard garden is a frequent source of inspiration for me and today is no exception: I have kumquats on the brain because my little kumquat tree that has been in the ground only 3 years is in full fruiting glory! The tiny golden fruit are so pretty that it’s entirely possible I will not be able to remove them from the tree. So much pleasure can be found in the garden just watching things grow.   Interestingly enough, kumquats seem to be on a lot of people’s minds around our city right now. They are everywhere I turn! I’ve realized…
